Palestinian runner Sanaa Abu Bkheet runs at her makeshift training ground in Deir El Balah, central Gaza Strip, on Wednesday. Abu Bkheet has qualified for the 800-meters at the Athens Olympics against great odds: She owns only one pair of running shoes, no access to a track and used to get pelted with rocks during her training runs. An earlier printing of the same dispatch, three weeks before the Indiana Gazette’s, and it gives her the top of the page in her own words rather than a headline about odds:
‘It’s not easy to be a runner in Gaza, especially for a female. It’s strange because of our traditions. It’s hard to see a girl running in the streets.’ set in large type above the photograph, with her name under it.
