“RAMALLAH, West Bank — A Palestinian presidential aide says that renowned Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish has died. Darwish died at a hospital in Houston following complications from an open heart surgery, according to Nabil Abu Rdeneh, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Darwish is the world’s most recognized Palestinian poet and became a Palestinian cultural icon. He was a vocal critic of both the Israeli occupation and the Palestinian leadership. His poetry is considered to have given voice to the Palestinian experience of exile, occupation and infighting. His work has been translated into more than 20 languages and he had won many international prizes.”

Set against the other set in this archive, the counts now stand: ten American printings of the killing of the novelist Ghassan Kanafani in 1972, of which one headline called him an artist and nine called him a leader, a chief, a militant, a guerrilla or a terrorist; and seven printings of the death of the poet Mahmoud Darwish in 2008, of which seven called him a poet. One man was assassinated and the other died after heart surgery, and both belonged to Palestinian political organisations, so the two sets are not a controlled comparison. They are counts, and this is what they count.
