THROUGH PALESTINE.
A Lecture on Holy Land in the New York Avenue Church.

Transcribed from the clipping
An illustrated lecture on Palestine was delivered in the New York Avenue M. E. Church, corner of Herkimer street, by Professor A. J. Marks, last night. The entertainment was given under the auspices of the King’s Daughters.
The church was well filled, and the audience closely followed the speaker throughout the entire lecture, which last[illegible] about an hour and was instructive as well as interesting. Professor Marks was attired as a Jewish scribe, in a robe fashioned after the coat of many colors worn by Joseph.
The various nationalities and classes in the Holy Land were represented by members of the church. Dr. Julian P.
Thomas represented an Arab sheik, with the staff as symbol of his rank; Walter Truslow was a Jewish priest, George Clote a sower, Alfred Patterson a dragoman or guide, Mortimer Newcomb a messenger, Frederick Napier, Augustin Rodriguez and Frederick Waller school boys. Misses Alice E. Griffin and Lily Isabel Brewer represented Fellah-een and Mohammedan women.
A Bedouin costume was also exhibited. Professor Marks had large paintings, executed by himself from photographs taken on the spot, of Jerusalem and of all the prominent places in Palestine. He also had a large picture of the holy city in her greatest glory.
He took his auditors on an imaginary journey from Dan to Beersheba, showing paintings of all the places of interest in the Holy Land. He closed his discourse by exhibiting a fine painting of the Crucifixion on Mount Calvary, which for its accuracy of detail was a sermon in itself.
He had many curiosities and relics from the Holy Land, which were shown to those who desired to see them after the lecture. Among others was a piece of olive wood, an Oriental pipe, water from the Dead Sea, a piece of the wall of Jerusalem, some wild honey such as John the Baptist lived on, and a crown of thorns from bushes growing on the River Jordan.
He also had for sale a map of a birdseye view of Palestine in the time of Christ. The lecture was doubly interesting from the fact that Professor Marks is at present on his way from Chicago to Palestine.
