Transcribed from the clipping
“New York,—(J. T.
A.)—The statement that the Zionist Executive has received from the Palestine government 20,000 certificates for the admission of 20,000 Chalutzim during the next six months and the prediction that immigration to Palestine during the coming year would thus probably rise to 70,000, was made by Louis Lipsky, chairman of the Zionist organization of America, Tuesday night at Town Hall when the leaders of the American Zionist Delegation to Vienna reported on the Fourteenth Zionist Congress.
Two thousand Zionists filled the hall and several hundred were turned away… The anti-Semitic demonstration at the Congress were less disturbing to the delegates than to their coreligionists in America, according to Dr. Wise. Dr. Wise disagreed with those critics of the Congress who declared ‘the Congress talked too much.’
‘The world chokes the Jews in many lands,’ he declared. ‘The Jew is not free to speak in Eastern Europe. When Jews finally get together, they speak freely and from their hearts.’…”
Context added by this archive
Seventy thousand people in a year, and twenty thousand entry certificates already issued by the Palestine government — announced from a stage at Town Hall to two thousand people, with several hundred turned away. The report is entirely administrative: certificates, numbers, a congress, a budget.
Nobody in Palestine is consulted in it, and the only disagreement recorded is between American Zionists about how much the congress talked. “The anti-Semitic demonstration… were” is the paper’s own setting.
