“Jerusalem. — (J. T. A.) — Palestinian citizens who wish to travel in the United Kingdom must obtain visas on their Palestanian passports from the Immigration and Travel Section at Jerusalem, an official notice published here states. Applications must be submitted to the Chief Immigration Officer through the Immigration or Police Officer of the district in which the applicants reside. The Immigration Officer at the port of arrival in the United Kingdom, before granting permission to land must be satisfied that the applicant complies with the British immigration laws and regulations. In addition to the visa, the traveller must be in a position to produce documents showing the object of his visit, the porposed length of his stay and his means of support in the United Kingdom. On obtaining leave to land, Palestanian citizens must comply with the regulations applying to aliens in the United Kingdom. Requests for exemption from registration under the Aliens Order, 1920, should be made to the Home Office.… A new novel by Vladimir Jabotinsky entitled ‘Samson the Nazarite’ in Russian will be published by the Logos Verlag of Berlin this month.”

Palestinian citizenship and Palestinian passports as plain administrative fact in 1927, in a notice about visa procedure — and the headline’s point, that holders of them counted as aliens in the country that governed them. This is the third distinct sense of the word the archive holds from 1927 alone: an Arab, when a St. Louis editor has to write “a Palestinian (not a Jew)”; a place, in “Palestinian cities”; and here a nationality on a travel document, covering everyone the Mandate administered. The paper spells it Palestanian twice and porposed once. Underneath runs a two-line notice of a new Jabotinsky novel.
