The Removal Of Hebrew Letters From Palestine Stamps Demand Of Arabs
With: Arabs Wish To Create “Smoke Bank” To Save Palestine From Zionists
Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Jerusalem

Transcribed from the clipping
“Jerusalem. (J.T.A.) The demand that the Palestine government abolish the two Hebrew letters, Aleph and Yud, the two initials of Eretz Israel, on the Palestine post stamps, was made by the Palestine Arab executive in a memorandum submitted to the Palestine High Court.
The memorandum demands that either these two initials be removed or that the words Syria Genovia meaning Southern Syria, be added in Arabic… requesting that amnesty be granted to a number of Arab youths who were arrested in connection with the strike which occurred on the arrival of Lord Balfour to Palestine.
The Arab executive also addressed a memorandum to General Sarrail, French High Commissioner of Syria, asking for the release of a number of Syrian leaders who were arrested in connection with the Druze rebellion… Five Arab notables decided to discontinue smoking for the purpose of establishing a fund for a bank to ‘save Palestine from the Zionist menace.’
The bank is to be known as the ‘smoke bank.’ The Arab paper ‘El Carmel’ warmly supports the idea and urges Arabs to abandon smoking and give the sums saved toward the ‘smoke bank.’”
Context added by this archive
In two columns of wire briefs: a Palestinian political executive, a petition to the High Court, a general strike, mass arrests, an Arabic newspaper and a boycott fund.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
