A NEW PALESTINE HAS EVOLVED
Fourteen Years Have Changed All Else, but Arab Politicians Are the Same

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM—To revisit Palestine after fourteen years is to visit a new country. There are districts where even the natural features of the land seem changed. Hundreds [illegible: roughly six words, one full line of type] Jerusalem are covered with houses.
Tel Aviv from a pioneer suburb of Jaffa has become a Jewish city of more than [illegible: six-figure number] inhabitants as well supplied with clinics, cinemas, schools, and concert halls as almost any East European town of its size. Haifa, with its new working-class quarters, throws a still untidy arm far out toward Acre and has climbed high up the ridge of Carmel.
Cultivation is more intensive, and tidier even, in the Arab areas. Orange groves have spread over the coastal plain almost to the Egyptian border to an extent which alarms the Zionist champions of mixed farming.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan at 4.5x to 26x by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by OCR and not by a person. This scan is at its resolution limit: two passages could not be read and are marked [illegible] in the excerpt rather than filled in - one whole line of type after 'Hundreds', and the six-figure population given for Tel Aviv. 'Acre' is a moderate-confidence reading. No masthead, folio or dateline day is printed, so the date rests on the slide label and is assigned by elimination against the two other images on slide 8, both of which are firmly dated. The credit line on the page, 'By a Special Correspondent of The Times of London', names the paper the feature was syndicated FROM; the publication attribution rests on the slide label alone. High re-scan priority.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
