“Palestine Jews had established tonight eleven new Jewish settlements in southern Jerusalem. As a political demonstration, they worked from dawn to dusk. It was believed that this was the largest number of settlements established in a day.”

Context added by this archive

Sixty-four words for the eleven points in the Negev — the settlements thrown up on the night of 5 October 1946, after the Yom Kippur fast, to put facts under the partition line before it was drawn. The brief gets the motive exactly right and calls it a political demonstration.

It gets the place wrong by sixty miles, the Negev becoming southern Jerusalem, and the hours wrong, a night operation becoming dawn to dusk. The largest settlement day in the Yishuv’s history, filed by Reuters, run as a filler.
