Two Notables Join Friday’s Opinion Forum

“Two outstanding speakers have been added to the Larchmont Forum for Public Opinion to discuss ‘To Whom Palestine?’ at the final meting of the season tomorrow at 8:30 P. M. in the Chatsworth Avenue School auditorium. They are Miss Louise Amin, for the last seven years teacher of social sciences at Beirut Junior College, Republic of Lebanon, and Dr. John G. Hazam, professor of history, Asiatic Division, College of the City of New York… Miss Amin, who holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from American University in Beirut, is now working on her doctor’s degree at the University of Chicago. Her thesis will be ‘Palestine’. She is vice president of the Federation of Arab Women Clubs in Lebanon and was official representative of Lebanon to the Arab Women’s Congress in Cairo in 1944, at which the status of Arab women, the problems of the country, and the question of Palestine were discussed. Her report of the Congress was published by ‘Moslem World’, a quarterly magazine. Dr. Hazam, who holds a B.A. degree from Yale University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, was born and raised near Damascus and is familiar with the entire Middle East. He will speak with Miss Amin in support of Arabs’ rights… Mr. Frank was held incommunicado by terrorist leaders whom he interviewed in Palestine, was arrested by the Secret Police in Lebanon, and was one of the few American correspondents to attend the censored trial in Cairo of the two Palestinian youths who assassinated Lord Moyne, British minister in the Middle East.”

Two things at once. An Arab woman academic is billed as a headline speaker in a Westchester school hall on the question of Palestine: vice president of the Federation of Arab Women Clubs in Lebanon, Lebanon’s delegate to the 1944 Arab Women’s Congress in Cairo, writing a Chicago doctorate called Palestine. With the 1929 congress in Jerusalem, the 1938 congress Sadhij Nassar was elected secretary of, and the second world congress Matiel Mogannam was planning in 1945, this archive now holds four of these gatherings reported in American papers across seventeen years. The second thing is in the last paragraph: the men who assassinated Lord Moyne were members of Lehi, and this paper calls them the two Palestinian youths.
