Cease-Fire Demand In Palestine Expected

Transcribed from the clipping
Lake Success, May 8—(AP)—A three-power demand for an immediate cease-fire by Syria and Israel in Palestine is expected to come before the Security Council today. The United States, Britain and France were reported readying such a demand for the meeting, called to consider the outbreak of fighting in the Holy Land between Syrians and Israelis.
The three nations were reported asking other countries to co-sponsor the resolution.

Date and publication rest on the collector's slide label; no masthead, folio or printed dateline appears on this clipping.
Context added by this archive
A short AP brief, complete on the clipping. No masthead, no folio, no printed date, no city of publication; date is label-only and the city_state field is left empty because nothing on the scan identifies which Daily Times this is. FLAG FOR EVA: 'The Daily Times' is a very common American newspaper name and there is nothing in this clipping to tie it to a particular town.
If the archive already holds a 'Daily Times', confirm it is the same paper before this record is ingested, and if it is not, the two will collapse into one. The dateline 'Lake Success, May 8' places it at the UN's temporary headquarters, which the UN left in 1951; the fighting referred to is the Israeli-Syrian exchange over the Huleh demilitarized zone in early May 1951.
Both are consistent with Maria's label of 8 May 1951. There is no deck. WORDS FOR THE PLACE AND PEOPLE: 'Palestine' twice, in the headline and in 'by Syria and Israel in Palestine'; 'the Holy Land' once. Palestine here is purely a theatre of operations between two other states.
The parties named are 'Syria and Israel', 'Syrians and Israelis', 'The United States, Britain and France', 'the Security Council', 'the three nations', 'other countries'.
WHAT IS ABSENT: in a story whose headline is the word Palestine, not one Palestinian appears, and no inhabitant of the demilitarized zone — which was farmland worked by Palestinian villagers — is mentioned at all.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
