JEWISH LAND BUYING IN PALESTINE URGED

Transcribed from the clipping
Land is the “fundamental problem” of the Jews in Palestine today,, Mendel N. Fisher, executive director of the Jewish National Fund of America, declared yesterday. He spoke to 1,500 members of the New York chapter of Hadassah, Women’s Zionist Organization of America, at a mother-daughter luncheon in the Hotel Commodore. Mr.
Fisher asserted that the “dualism of the Jew is due to landlessness” and held that the secret of success of the Russians during the war was that “they fought for their soil.” Since the luncheon served to mark V-E Day and to celebrate the forthcoming Mother’s Day, Mr.
Fisher urged Hadassah members to buy additional land in Palestine to “implement the decision to settle 100,000 Jews” there. He called land purchase the best Jewish answer to the recent report of the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry on Palestine, adding that buying was facilitated through removal of land restrictions. Mrs.
Sol Boneparth, president of the New York chapter, announced that $5,000 of land purchasces in Palestine had been made.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by optical character recognition and not by a person. The clipping carries no masthead or date line, so its date and newspaper rest on the record it arrived with, not on anything visible in the scan.
Context added by this archive
Date check: No masthead or page date line on the clipping. The story has no dateline and refers to a luncheon held “yesterday,” so the 1946-05-09 date cannot be confirmed from the image. The reference to the recent report of the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry on Palestine (published 1 May 1946) is consistent with an early-May 1946 date.
