Bevin Talks Like Lessing Rosenwald

“The breakdown in the negotiations in London… was due, rather, to a fundamental conflict between the British and the Jews as to whether the Jews are a people or simply a religious community… Mr. Bevin, on the contrary, reveals himself as a true and staunch disciple of Lessing Rosenwald. Jews to him are a religion only. Hence, they have no claim to statehood.”

The same test as the 1922 editorial, applied to a British foreign secretary. Forty-one years later the Associated Press would report that to Israelis “who is a Palestinian is almost as vexing a question as who is a Jew,” and that those who deny Palestinian nationhood say Palestinian Arabs. Whether a group is a nation or merely a category is the question that decides what you are permitted to call them, and this archive can now show it asked in both directions.
