“KHAN YUNIS, Gaza Strip of Palestine, Sept. 3 — Israeli forces killed fifteen policemen, twelve Palestinian Arab soldiers and eight villagers here in an armored-car raid Wednesday night.”

Context added by this archive

Three days after four American papers put Egypt in the headline, Harry Gilroy of the New York Times files from the town itself, and his dateline reads

Gaza Strip of Palestine. The dead are counted as policemen,

Palestinian Arab soldiers and

villagers. He finds a man named Abu Sharakh, formerly the mayor of Migdal — a town now inside Israel and called Ashkelon — sitting on the Khan Yunis town council. He notes the Egyptian jeeps are American-made and the Egyptian helmets British.

Distance from the place decides what it is called. The wire desk said Egypt; the reporter standing in the rubble said Palestine.
