“PEACEMAKING FEAST IN KAFR KASIM—Israeli Jews and Arabs join in a feast at Kafr Kasim, Israel, on the Arab Jordan border, symbolizing forgiveness and atonement for the slaughter in the village last year. An Israeli border police patrol killed 49 Israeli Arabs and wounded 14 on October 29 last year for breaking a suddenly imposed curfew. The feast, known as Soulha or peacemaking, symbolized acceptance by Israeli Arab villagers of government compensation for their killed and wounded.”—AP Wirephoto.

A year after the killings, the photograph of the sulha: the two sides at one long table, and a caption that uses the word slaughter and gives the number as forty-nine. The last sentence explains what the meal was for.
