Transcribed from a scan of the printed page, and THE EXCERPT IS DELIBERATELY EMPTY. THE CLIPPING IS CUT DOWN ITS RIGHT EDGE AND EVERY LINE OF BODY TEXT LOSES ITS LAST CHARACTER OR TWO: at eighteen times magnification the lines end 'because he did no', 'discuss Palestine in his speec', 'at the North Atlantic Counc', 'the Soviet penetration of Syri'. Any excerpt would have meant supplying letters that are not on the paper, so none has been written. At page scale the clipping looks complete, and a first reading of it silently filled those gaps; only magnification showed the characters were missing. THE DATE CANNOT BE READ EITHER. The dateline is 'BEIRUT, Lebanon, Dec. ?0' - the second digit is plainly 0, the first is an ink-filled glyph consistent with 2, 3 or 5, and it will not resolve at fifty-five times magnification by two readers independently. The slide label says the 21st, which requires a dateline of Dec. 20 and is therefore consistent with one of the live readings and contradicted by the other; the label date has been kept and not changed. Content leans toward Dec. 20, since the speech the article answers was given at the Paris NATO meeting of 16 to 19 December 1957, but that is an inference about news rhythm, not a reading of the page. The headline and deck ARE recorded, each with one terminal character sliced by the same cut. The newspaper is identified from the printed credit line 'Special to The New York Times'.
