TEL AVIV, Sept. 27 — Three Israeli soldiers were killed yesterday evening when a mine blew up their ammunition carrier in the Negev. Two other soldiers were seriously injured, but three escaped unhurt. The men were returning to their base. The mine was laid in a dirt track five miles south of the ruins of the Byzantine city of Subeita.

It was said to have been laid by a band of Bedouins who recently planted other mines in the Negev. Some of them damaged vehicles, but other s were detected before they caused damage. Meanwhile, the police here announced that in cooperation with the security services they had uncovered a terrorist cell in the village of Tira in the Sharon Plain. Four Israeli Arabs were arrested.

How this transcription was made

Read from the scan by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by optical character recognition and not by a person. The clipping carries no masthead or date line, so its date and newspaper rest on the record it arrived with, not on anything visible in the scan.

Context added by this archive

Date check: No masthead or folio line on this clipping — it is a trimmed single column. Below the headline, between rules, stands the credit line “Special to The New York Times”, which agrees with `pub`. The dateline reads “TEL AVIV, Sept. 27”, consistent with publication on 1968-09-28; no year appears on the scan.
