“A 49-9 per cent plurality of the American people disapproves of the recent United Nations resolution proclaiming that ‘Zionism is racism and a form of racial prejudice.’ However, a significantly high 42 per cent either are not sure of how they feel about the issue or simply have not followed the event. A 66-12 per cent majority of the college educated disapproved, as does an even higher 70-8 per cent of professional people… nowhere in the country does approval of the U.N.’s action reach a mark higher than 14 per cent… The main reason that people are opposed to the U.N. action is the feeling that ‘Jewish people are entitled to have a homeland of their own.’ And no more than 9 per cent of the American people believe that ‘Zionism is racism.’… By 54 per cent, a majority takes the U.N. vote as a sign that ‘anti-semitism is high in many parts of the world’… On a straight-out sympathy question between the Israelis and the Arabs, the margin is now eight to one pro-Israel. This had dropped close to five to one just this past summer… Between Nov. 22 and 29, the Harris Survey asked a cross section of 1,475 adults nationwide… The United States may have been outvoted in the recent United Nations debate on whether Zionism is indeed racism, but in the process, U.S. support for the U.N. has been seriously weakened.”

The second printing in this archive of the same syndicated column, the same day as the Longview Daily News version already held. This one prints both tables in full, broken down by schooling and by job: approval never rises above 12 per cent in any group, and among people who left school at eighth grade, 63 per cent have no view at all. Nine per cent of Americans agreed with the resolution. Forty-two per cent had not followed it.
