Show of Artists from Palestine

“A collection of 50 paintings by 11 Palestinian artists will be on public exhibit noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Sponsored by the Assn. of Arab-American University Graduates in Southern California, the exhibit, the first of its kind, is designed to present the Arabic art and culture of the Palestinian people to the American public. Two of the artists, Issam Badr and Suliman Mansur, are touring with the exhibit. Others whose work is represented in the show are: Bashir Sinwar, Ibrihim Saba, Ismail Ashour, Jamal Badran, Nabil Anani, Samira Badran, Vera Tamari, Laila Al-Shawa and Khalil Dadah.”

Eleven Palestinians named in five lines, four of them women, in a listing so short it carries no byline. Two of these names recur in this archive decades later: Nabil Anani builds an upside-down Statue of Liberty in the rubble at Ramallah in 2002, and Suliman Mansur — spelled Suleiman Mansour by every later paper here — has his gallery closed in 1980 and stands outside Ketziot prison in 1988. The sponsoring body is the same association whose 1976 convention the Tampa Times covered in CP-1976-008.
