JERUSALEM, Sept. 16 — President Chaim Herzog pardoned a Jewish settler from the occupied West Bank who had been convicted and sentenced to a year in jail for shooting into an Arab house in Hebron, injuring a 5-year-old girl with flying glass, the Israeli radio reported today. The settler, Arye Bar-Yosef, had served 5 months of his 12-month sentence.

The trial court originally imposed a four-month jail term, with six months suspended, and fined him the equivalent of about $750. The Justice Ministry, which has been trying to toughen punishment of Jewish vigilantes, appealed, calling the sentence too lenient, and the Supreme Court raised it to a year in jail. Mr.

Herzog thus used his power to counteract the Supreme Court decision. No reason for his decision was given.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
