P.L.O. Rebels Say They’re Winning

Transcribed from the clipping
BEIRUT, Lebanon, Oct. 7 — In the last two weeks the Syrian-backed rebels seeking to overthrow Yasir Arafat as the Palestinian guerrilla leader feel they have gained the upper hand. “We have won the first round, and the majority of the civilian and military cadres in Al Fatah are now on our side,” the leader of the rebels, Col.
Saed Musa, said at a news conference today in Baalbek in the Bekaa, Lebanon’s eastern valley. “We are now able to direct the battle, and Yasir Arafat can only make statements detrimental to the Palestinian cause,” Colonel Musa said.
How this transcription was made
Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. The page carries no masthead, running head or folio, so the date is NOT fixed from a printed date line; it rests on the slide label, corroborated by the article's own internal dating. The dateline reads 'BEIRUT, Lebanon, Oct. 7', the caption refers to 'Thursday', and the text counts forward through 'Sept. 17' and 'On Sept. 24' to the present day, which is consistent with an 8 October 1983 paper carrying a 7 October dispatch. The newspaper is identified from the printed credit line 'Special to The New York Times' under the byline, not from a masthead. The excerpt is the article's opening three paragraphs, read from crops magnified to thirteen times page scale.
