As with most complicated issues, it is easy to allow hyperbole to gloss over and distort the truth. A recent column published on April 24 on this page of the Star-Telegram concerning Palestinian academic freedom is one that fits in that category and does little to further the cause of understanding the problem.

Since 1967, the West Bank and Gaza have flourished economically under Israeli rule. More of its people vote, and women are no longer second-class citizens. Its citizens elect town councils and mayors.

Travel in and out of the West Bank to Israel and Jordan is unrestricted, although there are numerous checkpoints in the West Bank as part of Israel’s anti-terrorist campaign.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.

Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1984-040.
