The oppressive Israeli occupation

“…more were arrested or interrogated. According to Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, it was the PLO that moved the Palestinian masses to the streets to protest against the Israeli occupation.
By this claim, Shamir tries to discredit the PLO, by attributing this wave of protest to it and putting on its shoulder the responsibility for the deaths of Palestinians who are shot by the IDF.
This while Shamir and his colleagues in the Israeli political leadership continue to declare that the PLO does not represent the Palestinian people, and that they refuse to talk to it or accept it as a partner in any peace talks.
In fact, if the PLO was able to move the Palestinian masses to the streets to protest against the Israeli occupation, then it should be recognized as an effective leadership that has its roots deep within its own people. However, the issue is much deeper than this.
During the last 20 years of Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, the Israelis used all possible methods to liquidate the Palestinian national movement. More than 300,000 Palestinians have been in and out of Israeli jails, experiencing ill-treatment including humiliation and physical and psychological torture. More than half of the Arab lands have been confiscated.
Thousands of houses have been demolished and thousands of Palestinians have been deported. The military administration of the occupied territories, now called the Civil Administration, is staffed by right-wing, nationalist fanatics, most of whom identify ideologically with…”
