JERUSALEM, April 28 (Reuters) — Israeli soldiers shot dead a Palestinian youth in the occupied West Bank today when hundreds of teen-agers clashed with troops, the army said. A military spokesman said the Palestinians attacked an army patrol with stones in the village of Malek, near Ramallah.

When a youth threw a firebomb at the troops, soldiers opened fire, killing the Palestinian, the spokesman said. He said several Palestinians were arrested.

How this transcription was made

Transcribed from the slide scan by a reader working off magnified crops, not by optical character recognition. The clipping is a complete two-paragraph Reuters brief cut to its own rules, with no masthead, no folio, no byline and no printed year. The day and month come from the printed dateline, “JERUSALEM, April 28 (Reuters)”. BOTH THE YEAR AND THE NEWSPAPER REST ON THE HAND-TYPED SLIDE LABEL: nothing on this clipping identifies either, and a brief of this length in this typeface could have run in many American papers. The brief names no one: the Palestinian youth it reports shot dead is given no name, no age and no place beyond the village of Malek, near Ramallah, and every assertion in it is attributed to the Israeli army.
