“The main problem for Palestinians today is not so much centered on how much territory they will regain. The main problem is that I as a Palestinian have constantly been seen by the West as a refugee or a terrorist or an Arab — never really addressed as a Palestinian… the facts about the Palestinian — the human side — have not been presented in this country.”

Excerpts from a two-hour debate between members of Rochester’s Arab and Palestinian community and members of its Jewish community, printed at length. Abraham Kharroubi, 44, born in what is now northern Israel, names the mechanism; across the table Kilimnick describes it from the other end — “Palestinians in my mind have not only been Palestinians but terrorists… But I’m just saying this is the perception” — and says he now understands there is another story. The paper printed both without adjudicating. Also named: Basem Ashkar, 40, born in Jerusalem, a supervisor at Ragu Foods; Nabil Kaylani, 47, professor of international relations.
