Palestinian, 12, Dies in Gaza After Being Shot by Israelis
Special to The New York Times

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM, May 20 — A 12-year-old Palestinian boy who was shot in the chest during a violent clash with Israeli troops in a Gaza Strip refugee camp on Friday died this morning in a Gaza hospital, Palestinians said. The death of the boy, Nathmi Abu Khatla, brings to five the number of Palestinians fatally wounded in Friday’s melee in the Rafa district.
Another Palestinian was killed in the Jabaliya district in the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip, and three Palestinians and an Israeli soldier were killed in a gun battle near Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by optical character recognition and not by a person. The printed date on the page agrees with the date recorded here. Not a separate clipping. The second story on the same sheet of newsprint as mas1989thenewyorktime, given its own record because the main article is about seven accused journalists and this item is about nine deaths, one of them a named child who appears nowhere else in the archive. It shares that record’s src scan and slide deliberately. Unlike the mas1988 pair, both pub and date here are read off printed type: the masthead at the head of the shared page reads THE NEW YORK TIMES INTERNATIONAL SUNDAY, MAY 21, 1989, page 3.
Context added by this archive
This item shares its page with CP-1989-028. Nathmi Abu Khatla is named once on the whole sheet, in the sentence that turns him into a number: the death of the boy brings to five the number of Palestinians fatally wounded. Nine deaths are reported in three paragraphs and his is the only name among them. The headline says Palestinian, 12.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
