West Bank and Taxes
Jesse Zel Lurie

Transcribed from the clipping
To the Editor: Clinton Bailey’s comparison of the tax revolt in the West Bank town of Beit Sahour to an American town with a majority of former Mexicans “who wished to secede from the Union” is false (letter, Nov. 26). Beit Sahour does not have a “majority” of former Palestinians. It is all Palestinian, 100 percent Palestinian Arabs.
It cannot secede from Israel because it was never part of Israel. Beit Sahour is in the occupied West Bank. Its residents refused to pay Israeli taxes under the slogan of “no taxation without representation” — a slogan that should be familiar to all U.S. citizens.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1989-043.
