NAHAL OZ, Israel — Palestinian families embraced in tearful reunions Monday after Israel freed 195 prisoners, including 13 who had completed their terms, as a goodwill gesture to coincide with the sixth round of Middle East peace talks in Washington.

The prisoners were freed at the Nahal Oz checkpoint, an entrance to the occupied Gaza Strip where 750,000 Palestinians live. Others were taken to the occupied West Bank. A total of 600 prisoners are to be released over the next few days, an Israeli Army spokeswoman said. About 10,000 Palestinians are in prison.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.

Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1992-021.
