U.S. protests ‘State of Palestine’ placard in U.N.
The United States ambassador says Palestine’s nonvoting member status does not give it statehood.

“U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice objected Wednesday to the Palestinians’ latest bid to capitalize on their upgraded U.N. status when their foreign minister spoke at the Security Council while seated behind a nameplate that read ‘State of Palestine’… ‘Any reference to the ‘State of Palestine’ in the United Nations, including the use of the term ‘State of Palestine’ on the placard in the Security Council… do not reflect acquiescence that ‘Palestine’ is a state,’ she added.”

The naming argument reduced to an object on a table. Seventeen days after the State Department objected to the word on official stationery, an American ambassador objected to it on a nameplate, and the Associated Press printed the objection with the contested words in quotation marks four times in one sentence. Robert Serry of the UN explained that the placard said what it said because the Secretariat “is guided by the membership.”
