Egypt floats Mideast truce
Netanyahu said to be mulling over Gaza plan
By Batsheva Sobelman and Carol J. Williams / Tribune Newspapers

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM — Egyptian mediators proposed a plan late Monday to halt a weeklong artillery exchange between Israelis and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip that has taken at least 175 Palestinian lives and sent millions of Israelis scrambling for cover from more than 1,000 rocket firings.
The government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a meeting of security officials for early Tuesday, and one government source speaking on condition of anonymity said the proposal is “being considered very seriously.”
Israel’s Haaretz newspaper cited an unnamed government official as saying Netanyahu “supports the Egyptian proposal for cease-fire in Gaza and will ask the Cabinet to accept it.” There had been no Israeli deaths in the conflict as of early Tuesday.
Publicly, both Israeli and Palestinian leaders lashed out at the plan as little more than a timeout in the third deadly flare-up between the sides since 2009. Bombardment of the densely populated Gaza coastal region has killed more civilians than militants, both sides concede.
On Monday, the soaring toll prompted the Palestinian Authority to appeal for United Nations protection.

Context added by this archive
The best photograph in batch B and the only one with a named Palestinian child in it.
Note the paper's own sentence in the fifth paragraph: 'Bombardment of the densely populated Gaza coastal region has killed more civilians than militants, both sides concede' - stated in the paper's voice and attributed to both parties rather than to a Palestinian source, which is unusual in this batch.
The Bennett material arrives late and is clearly labelled as hard-line. 'Occupied' does not appear; the Hamas demands in the right rail include 'an end to all aggression against Palestinian territory', which is the closest the page comes.
