One Arab student has registered at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, according to a report received yesterday by the American Advisory Committee, of which Felix M. Warburg is chairman. Others who registered when the university opened its fifth year on Nov. 6 included a large group from Poland and one student from Canada.

The largest registration for the last semester was in the course in Hebrew literature, conducted by Professor J. Klausner. Sixty took the course.

As a result of a gift of $5,000 from David Shapiro, owner of the Jewish Day-Wahreit of this city, the director of the Hebrew University library reported to the American office that the collection of Yiddish volumes had increased from 5,000 in 1927 to more than 7,500. Dr. Bergman said news of the establishment of a fund by Mr.

Shapiro had spread all over the world, with the result that many gifts of Yiddish books were being received. Among them were important collections from the late Dr. Chaim Spivak’s library in Denver and the library of the late Dr. Joseph Hazanovich of Warsaw.

How this transcription was made

Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. NOTHING ON THIS CLIPPING NAMES THE NEWSPAPER, so the publication rests on the slide label alone. No date is printed either; the clipping is cut above the headline rule. The only internal dating is 'when the university opened its fifth year on Nov. 6' with the news 'received yesterday', which places the piece in the second half of November 1930 - consistent with the labelled date but not fixing the day. THE EXCERPT CONTAINS AN ELISION, marked with an ellipsis. The printed 'Jewish Day-Wahreit' is the paper's own rendering of the Yiddish daily usually written The Day-Wahrheit, and the dropped h has been kept, checked at twenty-two times page scale on the single word. The same column spells the librarian's name 'Dr. Bergman' and, further down, 'Dr. Bergmann'. Read from crops magnified to between eight and nine times page scale.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
