Communists Clash With Police In Demonstration On Kfar Kassem

“TEL AVIV (JTA) — Communist efforts to exploit the first anniversary of the slaying of 49 Arabs in Kfar Kassem village led to a police crackdown in which many Communists were arrested following a clash with police in the streets of Nazareth. The clash was the second Communist-inspired effort to gain political capital from the Kfar Kassem slayings.
The first was an attempt by Tewfik Toubi, Communist Arab member of the Knesset, to break into the Arab village despite a police cordon. The Kfar Kassem disaster, which occurred on the eve of the Sinai operation, remains a source of bitterness and tension despite Premier Ben Gurion’s expressions of regret and the compensation paid to the families of the victims.
The fact that the military tribunal has not completed court martial hearings in the case has increased the bitterness of the region, which the Communists are trying to exploit.”

Forty-nine people killed at Kafr Qasim, reported a year later as a problem of Communist exploitation. The killings are named in the first sentence and never described. The Arab member of the Knesset who tried to reach the village is named.
