The Klinghoffers Sue P.L.O. for $1.5 Billion

Transcribed from the clipping
The family of Leon Klinghoffer, the 69-year-old Manhattan man who was slain during last month’s hijacking of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro, yesterday sued the Palestine Liberation Organization for $1.5 billion for “wanton and coldblooded murder.”
The suit, which asked for $100 million on each of 15 separate counts, was filed in State Supreme Court in Manhattan by the family’s attorney, Jay Fischer. In Federal District Court in Manhattan, Mr. Fischer filed a second suit against the owners of the the Achille Lauro, Chandris Italy Inc.; the Port of Genoa, and Club ABC Tours Inc.
The second lawsuit charged the defendants with failing to adequately insure the safety of Mr. Klinghoffer and his wife, Marilyn, while they were aboard the Achille Lauro. As examples of their negligence, the suit said that the defendants had not adequately inspected the luggage of the passengers or their passports.
The Federal lawsuit did not ask for a dollar amount, but for compensatory and punitive damages.
