JERUSALEM, Jan. 14 — The Israeli authorities detained 10 Palestinians, most regarded as members of the moderate Arab establishment, in a continuing crackdown today as scattered disturbances continued in the occupied territories. Seven of the Palestinians were freed later today, and three, all journalists, remained in custody.

The best-known of those taken into custody was Hanna Siniora, editor of the Arabic newspaper Al Fajr. He was released tonight after questioning. Five other journalists, two lawyers and two doctors were also detained. One journalist was ordered jailed for six months without trial and two others were still being held tonight.

The disturbances in the West Bank and Gaza Strip today were mostly stone-throwing clashes with the army. At least 35 Palestinians have been shot dead since early December, in the most violent wave of unrest since Israel seized the areas in the 1967 war.

The army maintained a curfew on all eight refugee camps in the Gaza Strip and several more in the West Bank, keeping more than a quarter of a million residents indoors. There were several reports that the army had broken into houses and beat people.

The tactic of imposing curfews and sealing off areas is intended to not only keep demonstrators off the streets but also divide the population from the protesters in hope of ending protests. “We will supress this violence,” Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin said on Israeli television late Wednesday night.

“It could take another week or two, a month or a month and a half. We will maintain the necessary forces.” The army said two weeks ago that it had arrested 2,000 Palestinians as leaders of the protests. On Wednesday, defying international criticism, Israel deported four West Bank Palestinians, leaving them on a remote mountain road in Lebanon.

Five more are awaiting deportation.

How this transcription was made

This scan is a complete newspaper page carrying TWO complete articles side by side, and the archive holds a record for each. This record transcribes the upper story, “Israelis Detain 10 Palestinians Termed Moderates” by John Kifner. The lower story on the same page, “Israel’s Economy Is Suffering As Arab Workers Stay Home”, in which Said, a 24-year-old from Khan Yunis, is the only Palestinian quoted, is a separate record, o880115economy. Both records show the whole page as it was printed rather than a crop of half of it, so the archive’s claim that every record is a photograph of the page its story ran on stays true; the cost is that the same photograph appears twice under two ids. The page also carries two shorter items not transcribed in either record: “4 Transferred to Guerrillas” from Beirut, and an Associated Press story from Seoul about the Korean Air bombing.
