Victims of the conflict
■ Middle East: Instead of the peace that leaders hoped for, the Middle East is again the setting for violence. In the past seven weeks, more than 200 Palestinians, Israelis and Israeli Arabs have died in clashes – by gunshots, bombs, hangings, stabbings and stones. Almost every day, the list of victims grows. Whatever their cause, or the circumstances of their deaths, they deserve at least to be named, and remembered as part of a conflict seemingly without end.

How this transcription was made
Date confirmed on the page (page folio, which reads “Page 2A : Wednesday, November 15, 2000 : The Sun”; agrees with the slide label). A list-format page. Its named individuals are published but are excluded from the per-clipping naming rate, which counts ordinary articles.
Context added by this archive
Maria's note on this clipping: she is right that it does the thing almost nothing else in the archive does. The page gives the whole seven weeks as a single run-on roll of 210 names set in body type across the full measure, each with age, nationality and date of death, broken only by square bullets, with the headline and standfirst dropped into a well in the middle.
The layout is the argument: there is no hierarchy, no photograph of a victim, no story about any one of them, and nothing to say whether a person was shot at a checkpoint or lynched in a police station. The standfirst makes that explicit — “Whatever their cause, or the circumstances of their deaths, they deserve at least to be named”.
On whether the paper gave Palestinian and Israeli dead the same detail: formally yes, the same four fields for everyone, and the first name on the page is an Israeli soldier. Where the symmetry breaks it breaks against the Israeli entries, which supply the only three missing ages.
Against that, the two pull quotes give the page a 1993 Oslo frame — Rabin on the left, Arafat on the right, both dated Sept. 13, 1993 — which reads the seven weeks as the failure of a peace two leaders promised rather than as anything with a cause. 183 of the 210 dead are Palestinian and the youngest is nine; the page does not remark on either.
For the name page: the youngest entries are Mohammad Abu Asi, 9 (Oct. 4), and Mohammad El Dura, 12, and Samer Tabanja, 12 (both Oct. 1); Fares Odeh, 14 (Nov. 8) is also here.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
