“ASHDOD, Israel — Instead of attending her usual classes at the local high school, Livnette Cecil and her friends were working yesterday at cleaning streets and picking up trash. All of Ashdod was proud of them.
Their work was part of an experiment, city officials explained earnestly, an experiment at prohibiting Palestinians from working for the municipality and replacing them at any cost with Israelis, even if it means taking Israeli pupils out of school. ‘We’re trying to have a separation of forces,’ said David Artom, a city spokesman, using the language of warfare.
The city is trying to keep Palestinians and Israelis apart by telling Palestinians they aren’t welcome here, at least not now… ‘They should be kept there until they calm down,’ said a woman who walked into the video store. By the standards of the moment, she was a moderate, disagreeing with Mr.
Alfonta, the manager, when he suggested expelling all the Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and West Bank. ‘We can’t put them on trucks,’ she said. ‘We’re not Hitler.’”
