“That’s because Israel proper, within its recognized pre-1967 borders, contains some 6 million Jews and almost 2 million Arab citizens. In the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem are almost 4 million Palestinians.
If Israel does not settle its borders, this argument runs, it may find itself awash in an Arab majority that cannot forever be denied full democratic rights…
Refugees. The Palestinians demand that Israel recognize a ‘right of return’ for Palestinian refugees, defined as more than 700,000 people who fled or were driven from their homes in what is now Israel. Plus their millions of descendants…
Prisoners. Israel holds nearly 5,000 Palestinians for alleged crimes ranging from stone-throwing to deadly attacks. Dozens of them are being held without charges or trial.”
