“That’s because Israel proper, within its recognized pre-1967 borders, contains some 6 million Jews and almost 2 million Arab citizens. In the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem are almost 4 million Palestinians. If Israel does not settle its borders, this argument runs, it may find itself awash in an Arab majority that cannot forever be denied full democratic rights… <b>Refugees.</b> The Palestinians demand that Israel recognize a ‘right of return’ for Palestinian refugees, defined as more than 700,000 people who fled or were driven from their homes in what is now Israel. Plus their millions of descendants… <b>Prisoners.</b> Israel holds nearly 5,000 Palestinians for alleged crimes ranging from stone-throwing to deadly attacks. Dozens of them are being held without charges or trial.”
