Former Palestinian Native Tells Of Conditions There

“KEYPORT — Zvi Levavy, Perth Amboy, spoke on ‘Palestine’ at the dinner meeting of the Keyport Kiwanis club in Ye Cottage Inn, W. Front st., Tuesday evening.
Levavy, a native of Palestine for many years, described the recent disturbances there as ‘unfortunate incidents’ condemned by the responsible citizens and termed them the result of political, not religious issues, promoted by subversive elements.
He told of the struggle between Hitler’s regime and the Western powers for Palestine control, both for the Suez, Enland Suez life-line and Arab oil lands, and said that the Jews and Arabs were both secretly armed during the period previous to the actual outbreak of World War II.
Levavy stated that Palestine, a mandate of Great Britain, has a population of one million and a quarter composed of Arabs, Jews and Christians, with less than 600,000 Jews and with the Arabs as the major population block.
The speaker said that after the war the Jews hoped for the right to participate as a people in the peace conferences and were ready to develop Palestine’s undeveloped resources. However, he continued, they are disgusted with promises and a group of the population infuriated by the delay has taken direct action.
He commented that there are still one and a half million Jews in European concentration camps and said that the Jews still want freedom and liberty which they feel they can obtain in Palestine. At the meeting Harold A. Woolley and Andrew Deane were welcomed as new members. The speaker was presented by Herbert Rothenberg, Keyport Kiwanian.
The venison for dinner was provided by R. A. Beaman, a member of the club.”
