Covering Palestine

The other October sevenths

81 clippings printed on 7 October by 43 American newspapers, 1900 to 2019. Every one of them is in this archive. None of them is the one you are thinking of.

This archive stops on 6 October 2023. Everything in it was printed before that morning, which means it cannot tell you anything about what happened next. What it can tell you is what the seventh of October used to be: an ordinary date, on which American newspapers happened to be writing about Palestine, for 119 years.

They wrote about a free port at Haifa, and an agricultural expert's view of the country, and rent owed to the United Nations by landlords in Gaza. They also wrote, on this date, in 9 separate years between 1938 and 2004, about Palestinians being killed or wounded — and said so in the headline. In 2000, 8 different papers in this collection ran a 7 October story about Palestinians on the same morning.

Read it in order. The dates are doing the argument.

The last one

The most recent 7 October on file is 2019. It is not a dispatch. It is a photograph, filed from Deir al Balah in the central Gaza Strip and printed in a Detroit newspaper, of a man carrying the harvest.

What this page is not. These are not every 7 October story in the American press. They are every one in this archive, which was assembled by one researcher looking for particular things, and which holds 81 clippings for this date against 3,517 for all dates. A year missing above is a year nobody collected, not a year nobody printed.
